Estimate the Calories in Any Pour From Its Proof and Volume

Mara Solletti · Updated

Type your pour size, ABV, and sugar grams into the calculator to get an estimate, or scan the table of typical servings below it.

Alcohol calories come from the ethanol itself, so two numbers on the bottle — proof and pour size — determine most of what you drink. Published database entries often describe one serving weight without saying what proof they assume, which is why a shot of the same spirit shows wildly different figures around the web. Computing from the pour is more honest than quoting one database row.

Alcohol carries about 7 calories per gram — nearly double carbohydrate's 4. This estimator multiplies your pour volume by its alcohol by volume (ABV), ethanol's density (0.789 g/mL), and 7 kcal/g, then adds 4 kcal per gram of sugar for sweetened drinks. A ~ marks a formula estimate; the Pink Whitney figure is the producer's published value.

Estimated calories: ~98 kcal (98 from alcohol, 0 from sugar)

Mixers are not included — juice, soda, and cream liqueurs add their own carbohydrate and fat calories on top of the alcohol itself.
