Plan on About 6–8 Chicken Drumettes per Pound

Mara Solletti

A pound holds about 6–8 large raw chicken drumettes, but size and trimming change the count. Use package weight when recipes or calorie logs need precision.

Plan on about 6–8 large raw chicken drumettes per pound. Seven is a useful shopping estimate, not a fixed package standard. One current drumette-only retail listing specifies approximately 6–8 pieces in a one-pound pack (Vicinity Mart). Smaller pieces can push the count higher.

Weight of raw drumettes Estimated number of pieces
1/2 lb 3–4
1 lb 6–8
2 lb 12–16
3 lb 18–24
5 lb 30–40

These estimates are for bone-in, skin-on drumettes sold by themselves before cooking. If the package provides its own piece count, use that instead.

Check whether the package contains only drumettes

A drumette is the first segment of the wing—the portion shaped like a miniature drumstick—not a chicken drumstick. USDA identifies it as the “first segment wing portion (wing drummette)”.

“Party wings” or “wing sections” usually contain both drumettes and flats. Their counts should not be applied directly when a recipe calls for drumettes only. Published mixed-wing examples show how much products can differ:

Preparation matters too: cooked, breaded, sauced and ice-glazed products are not directly comparable with plain raw drumettes.

Calculate the count from your package

When the exact number matters, weigh several pieces:

  1. Weigh 4–6 raw drumettes together.
  2. Divide the weight by the number of pieces to find the average weight per drumette.
  3. Divide 16 ounces by that average.

For example, if six drumettes weigh 13.5 ounces, each averages 2.25 ounces:

16 ÷ 2.25 = 7.1 drumettes per pound

Round to seven for planning. Buy a small buffer if each person must receive the same number.

For calorie or macro tracking, use the weight basis specified by the package label or database entry. A pound purchased bone-in is not a pound of edible meat, and cooked drumettes weigh less after moisture loss. Do not switch between raw weight, cooked weight and edible-portion entries without adjusting the calculation.

Cook chicken wings to a minimum internal temperature of 165°F. USDA advises checking each wing with a food thermometer while avoiding the bone (Food Safety and Inspection Service).
