Published answers differ because they summarize the category in different ways. SYLTBAR describes most Prosecco as around 11% ABV, while Drinkaware gives a usual strength of around 12%. Vinovest reports a broader typical range of 10.5–12.5% ABV.
These figures should not be combined into a more precise average. “Around 11%” and “around 12%” are practical category summaries, whereas 10.5–12.5% is a wider reported range. The evidence also does not establish how frequently genuine Prosecco reaches 12.5% ABV, so that figure is better treated as a reported upper value than as a common bottle strength.
How to read the ABV on a Prosecco bottle
ABV means alcohol by volume. An 11% ABV label means that alcohol accounts for 11% of the beverage’s volume, as SYLTBAR’s explanation of Prosecco labels describes. It does not mean that 11% of the bottle’s weight is alcohol, nor does it describe the amount in one unspecified “glass.”

A legal minimum is a threshold that a qualifying wine must meet. It is not a statement that every bottle has that strength, and it is not a maximum.
Fermentation provides the underlying connection between sugar and alcohol. Real Simple explains that yeast consumes sugar and converts it into alcohol during fermentation. Finished results can therefore differ, but the supplied evidence does not quantify how much individual producers or vintages change Prosecco’s ABV. The Prosecco DOC production regulation identifies 10.5% vol for still and semi-sparkling Prosecco and 11% vol for sparkling Prosecco. Its detailed specifications also apply the 11% minimum to sparkling rosé.
The EUR-Lex specification for Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco gives a 10.5% minimum for the denomination’s base wine and Frizzante, and 11% for Spumante Superiore.

These are regulatory minimums, not category averages or full market ranges. A Spumante bottle can display an ABV above its 11% minimum, and a legal minimum cannot show how commonly any higher value occurs. Sweetness labels do not determine alcohol strength
Brut, Extra Dry, and Dry primarily indicate residual sugar rather than a dependable ranking of alcohol strength. Vinovest reports that Extra Dry Prosecco contains more residual sugar than Brut, while stating that neither style is meaningfully stronger than the other. The apparently contradictory terminology is important: “Extra Dry” can taste sweeter than “Brut,” but that does not make it a higher-ABV wine.
Sugar and alcohol are connected during fermentation because yeast converts sugar into alcohol. However, the sweetness remaining in the finished wine is not a direct measure of how much alcohol the wine contains. SYLTBAR likewise notes that a wine with more alcohol does not necessarily taste sweeter.
Consequently, a consumer choosing between Brut and Extra Dry should not infer strength from the sweetness term. The ABV label remains the relevant comparison. Two wines with different sweetness classifications may show the same ABV, while two bottles carrying the same sweetness term may show different strengths.
How much alcohol is in a glass of Prosecco?
There is no reliable universal amount “per glass” unless both the glass size and Prosecco ABV are specified. A 125 ml serving and a 180 ml serving are materially different pours, even when they contain the same wine. Regional measurement systems can also express the result differently.
Drinkaware reports that a typical-strength 125 ml glass of Prosecco contains around 1.5 UK units of alcohol. That example belongs to a UK-unit framework and uses a 125 ml pour. It should not be applied automatically to a larger restaurant glass.
A separate Drinkmeter example assumes a 180 ml serving at 12% ABV and reports 17 grams of alcohol. This is not a conflicting description of the same glass. It uses a larger pour, a stated 12% strength, and grams rather than UK units.

At a fixed serving size, a higher-ABV Prosecco contains more alcohol than a lower-ABV one. That is why a serving estimate should always be presented with its assumptions.
For a bottle or menu serving, first record the labeled ABV and the stated pour size. Then use a calculation or guidance source that matches the desired measurement system. A result stated in UK units should not be treated as a value in grams or another region’s standard-drink measure without an appropriate conversion.
Prosecco compared with Champagne, Cava, and still wine
Prosecco, Champagne, Cava, and still wine have overlapping alcohol percentages, so Prosecco is not universally weaker. Several secondary sources describe it as slightly lower in alcohol than Champagne or Cava, while others characterize their usual strengths as broadly similar. The labels on the bottles provide a better comparison than the category names alone.
For example, California Champagne Sabers describes Champagne as approximately 12–12.5% ABV and Prosecco as approximately 10.5–11.5%. Atelier du Vin gives a similar comparison, placing Champagne around 12–12.5% and Prosecco around 10.5–11%. Still wine also overlaps with Prosecco. Real Simple places most wines in an 11–13% alcohol range, while the Prosecco sources above cluster their shorthand answers around 11–12%. Some still wines will therefore be stronger than some Proseccos, but the categories cannot determine the result for two specific bottles.
When lower alcohol is the actual purchasing goal, compare the printed ABVs directly and keep the intended serving sizes comparable. Ordinary Prosecco contains alcohol and should not be treated as alcohol-free or automatically lower in strength simply because it is Prosecco.
